It's been over a decade

Since we could put toilet paper on the holder in a bathroom. Wally has always shredded the roll any time we've tried in the past. He kills those rolls with a mix of biting/fanging them and rabbit kicking them. What can I say, he's determined.

Every now and then, we'd hang a roll to see if things had changed and until now, no they had not. But in August, we tried again and voila!

Not yet

It’s been a long time since we’ve hung toilet paper from a proper toilet paper holder. As recently as two and a half years ago, I forgot to put away a roll (we store them in something like this) and Wally destroyed it. You can see photos of his destructive ways here.

He’s mellowed some as he's gotten older and he's even left the paper towel alone--he hasn’t fanged a roll since before the Great Flood so I wondered if maybe he’d lost interest in toilet paper also. Last night I hung a roll in the second bathroom as an experiment.

While he didn’t utterly destroy the roll, it’s clear he’s still quite interested in damaging it. So if you come to our house and you wonder where the toilet paper is, just look to the left of the toilet and you’ll see the storage canister holding the undamaged toilet paper.

I laughed

We have a cat that destroys paper. This isn’t the same cat that eats cardboard boxes—that’s Eddie and he can eat his weight in cardboard. Wally is obsessed with paper, primarily paper towel and toilet paper. So we can’t keep our toilet paper on a roll holder or whatever they’re called like normal people do. We have to keep ours in one of those storage canisters. Even then, he's gotten a roll out as you can see from the picture on the left.

Of course that means we have to take the roll out each time we need to do our business. I can’t speak for Kent but I tend to put the roll on the edge of the sink until needed, although sometimes I just put it on edge of the tub or the floor. The floor isn’t the best option, though, because once I forgot I left it there and Wally found it.

Yesterday I heard Kent swearing up a streak in the bathroom and I knew immediately what had happened. He did what I always feared I would do: he dropped the roll (a brand new one, by the way) straight into the toilet. Yes, I laughed—partly with relief that I hadn’t done it first, but mostly I laughed because it was funny.

Odds and ends

First, here's a final picture from Friday's rain. Please note this was a very small part of what actually ended up in the glass. Pretty gross, eh?

Next, here's a blurry picture of Wally, who's found the top of Kent's dresser. You may wonder why he's so exhausted when it's still early in the day. Well he's pooped because he's been shredding toilet paper again. I have mixed feelings about this latest shenanigans because on the one hand, that's an activity he did in Kansas City. So I wonder if he's feeling less stressed. On the other hand, he destroys perfectly good toilet paper. . .
